This is a terrific house. It was designed by the well-known
architect Tom Bosworth and built in 1990. The couple has traveled extensively,
and from their worldly experiences, they were determined to live in a
house that reminded them of being abroad. They did not want large bedrooms
or baths. Their focus was to create a great room on the inside for entertaining
through which a private interior garden could be accessed. This interior
courtyard gave them the opportunity to grill outside and have friends
enjoying the main floor of the house while keeping the upstairs separate
and private. Not shown in this photograph, opposite the exterior doors,
is a guest suite we completed with the exception of a kitchen. They entertained
and accommodated visiting professors from other countries for sometimes
months on end without any inconvenience to their own lifestyle. Originally,
the two bedrooms upstairs had exposed decks. We built these structures
to cover these exterior decks because they were rarely used and quite
often a moisture problem. By enclosing them with glass, they utilized
further bedroom space and could still open all the windows and feel the
connection to the view. We have been back to work on this house over the
years to add built-in bookcases, custom desks, window replacement and
various other improvements. |
